Chapter 16 - Plant Listings
As we have said throughout this book, no list we could give here would be complete. You have only to pick up a grower's catalogue and compare the section of it to one section of this list. You will find that it is much longer and more detailed. And then remember that the grower's list is nowhere complete. The plants which are listed and briefly described here are among the most popular and the most easily available. You will often need more information than we are able to give here in this form. The list is merely meant as a guide to certain basic needs of each plant to help you decide whether or not you want it in your home. You will note that we have omitted watering information, as we feel that one general rule covers all plants: water only when the plant needs watering, and then water thoroughly. This may mean twice a day or once a week. You can always tell when the plant needs water the soil will be dry to the touch. The numbers in the far right column denoting ease of cultivation can be interpreted roughly as: 1) Very easy, minimum care needed, 2) Easy to grow with a little attention, 3) Be careful and follow instructions here or from your florist carefully, 4) These plants are worth trying, but don't be discouraged if they don't work out.
